Ella Beatty as Lizzie Borden, her face spattered with blood, in an official still from Netflix's Monster
Entertainment 22 August 2026

This season of Monster picks a subject the court actually acquitted

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story lands on Netflix on 17 September, all eight episodes at once. Ella Beatty takes the title role, with Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps around her.

Netflix put out the trailer for the fourth season of Monster on 20 August, and with it the date and the full cast. Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story arrives on 17 September, with all eight episodes dropping on day one.

There is a structural difference between this season and the three before it, and it is not a matter of style.

Jeffrey Dahmer, the Menendez brothers and Ed Gein had one thing in common: all of them were convicted. Lizzie Borden was not. In August 1892 her father and stepmother were found hacked to death in Fall River, Massachusetts. She was charged, she stood trial, and she was acquitted — and the doubt left behind is exactly what turned the case into one of the most rewritten in American criminal history, complete with a skipping rhyme, a long shelf of stage adaptations and a house museum that still takes bookings.

The cast

Ella Beatty, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, plays Lizzie and is the first woman to carry the title role in the anthology. Charlie Hunnam returns for a second consecutive year, this time as her father Andrew, having played Ed Gein last season. Rebecca Hall is stepmother Abby, and Vicky Krieps takes the part of Bridget Sullivan, the family’s maid. Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden, Joey Pollari and Ryan Murphy regular Sarah Paulson fill out the ensemble.

Murphy created the season with Ian Brennan, as he has every instalment since the first.

What the tone is likely to be

The official logline describes a house built on humiliation and cruelty, and two women — the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and a rebellious maid — retreating into a fantasy of power and revenge. That is an openly authored reading of an unsolved case rather than a courtroom reconstruction, which in practice means anyone after documentary rigour will go unserved, and anyone who likes the Murphy register will recognise the ground immediately.

September is filling up with releases of roughly this shape. Netflix also brings its first Brazilian legal drama on 23 September, and a week before that Apple TV puts Slough House on the run in the sixth season of Slow Horses.

Andrew Garfield plays the ploughman who ends up…

Resident Evil is back in cinemas with a story the games never told

Zach Cregger's reboot runs alongside the Raccoon City night of the second game without using any of its characters. It reached Portuguese cinemas on 17 September, rated M/16, at 93 minutes.

Eight films across twenty-four years, two reboots, and this is the first one where nobody will recognise the lead. That is the point. The Resident Evil that opened in Portuguese cinemas on 17 September follows Bryan, a medical courier on his way to Raccoon City General when the outbreak starts. Not Leon, not Claire, none of the faces Capcom built over three decades. Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed it, set out the reasoning in an interview PlayStation…

The film Portugal is sending to the Oscars was shot entirely inside Coimbra

'A Memória do Cheiro das Coisas', by António Ferreira, beat five other titles in a vote of Portuguese Film Academy members. It follows a colonial-war veteran who moves into a care home and refuses to be looked after by a Black Portuguese carer.

A Memória do Cheiro das Coisas, directed by António Ferreira, will represent Portugal in the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards, on 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles. It is worth knowing what it is walking into. Portugal has entered this category every year since 1980, and we counted the run the academy and the category register keep between them: 42 entries across 46 years, not one of them nominated. Portugal's readers are reading more and buying less

An APEL study with Nielsen GfK puts the reading rate at 78%, its highest in three years, up from 73% in 2023. Over the same period the share of people who bought at least one book fell from 65% to 62%, and the average per buyer dropped from 7.5 books to 6.9.

More people are reading. Fewer people are paying for it. Both sentences come out of the same study, presented this week at the opening of Book 2.0 at the Centro Cultural de Belém, and the gap between them is the interesting part. Start with the good news. The reading rate went from 73% in 2023 to 76% in 2024 and 78% last year, which is the share of people aged 15 and over who say they read at least one book that year, and the highest figure of the three.…
