FC Porto beat Benfica 3-1 and end their 55-game unbeaten league run
Goals from Gabri Veiga, Froholdt and Hwang, a red card for Lenglet after 34 minutes and a seventh win in seven: FC Porto moved to 21 points, five clear of a Benfica side that had not lost a league game since the 2024/25 season.
They arrived at the clássico with a perfect record and left with it intact: FC Porto beat Benfica 3-1 on Sunday 20 September at the Estádio do Dragão, moving to 21 points in the Primeira Liga, five clear of their Lisbon rivals and six ahead of Sporting. FC Porto’s official match report records the matchday 7 result, in front of 49,560 fans.
For Benfica it cost more than three points. The defeat ended a 55-game unbeaten run in the league that went back to a loss away at Casa Pia in the 2024/25 season.
A red card and ten minutes
Gabri Veiga opened the scoring in the 31st minute, played through behind the defence by Pepê. Three minutes later Lenglet, already on a yellow, struck André Silva in the face and was sent off, leaving Benfica with ten men for more than an hour. They still levelled in the 51st, Alexander Bah heading in a Prestianni cross.
It did not last. Froholdt made it 2-1 in the 54th after a lay-off from André Silva, and Hwang In-beom, scoring his first goal for Porto, finished the game off in the 60th, again set up by the striker. “This win belongs to the collective work of the Porto family,” coach Francesco Farioli said afterwards, while Benfica’s Marco Silva lamented the defeat.
It was the result the build-up had pointed to going into kickoff: Porto arrived with six wins from six and left with seven from seven.
